Measuring Body Fat

Oh hai.  It’s me.  Don’t worry, I’m still working out.  And busting ass actually.  I decided that I’d been making too many excuses as to why I didn’t have to go to the gym 3 days a week, so, I decided to just do it.

Some days I feel like a Nike commercial.  But hey, for the last 2 weeks or so I’ve been at the gym nearly every other day.

Anyway, on to the topic at hand: body fat.

For my birthday back in February (the 21st, so you know to send me cards) I asked for a Tanita Body Fat Scale.  My mom gifted me this guy:

The Tanita BF-679 Body Fat/Body Water Monitor.

When I first got it, the scale told me I had 40.5% body fat, aka, that I was obese.  At the time, I sort of agreed, as I was 178 lbs and sorta flabby.

As I worked my way through NROL4W I also worked my way down to 36.5%, which also made sense.   I was losing inches all over the place while my weight was staying the same, so obviously I was swapping fat for muscle.

Then, my scale decided to tell me I was back up to 39%.  Just for kicks.  It’s still telling me I’m there, which I absolutely REFUSE to believe.  I mean, yeah, maybe back at the beginning of the year, but not now.

So, I went to my friend eBay and ordered a pair of calipers from Hong Kong.  They were, like, $2.

That’s not me.

Taking a measure of the suprailliac skin fold, I get 21mm, or according to this handy dandy chart:

29% body fat.  Which, hey, is apparently “Average” and I can deal with that.  While my actual body fat might be a bit higher since I’ve got such giant knockers and, well, boobs have a lot of fat, I at least have an easy way to keep track of how I’m doing.

So, that’s where I’m at.  Working away and really looking forward to my weekend of rest!  At least, rest from the gym.

  1. bahaha! Raynes. You cracked me up with that last paragraph. 😀

  2. You’re so super brave. I’m scared to use calipers to find my “real” body fat percentage because I’m convinced that all my loose skin will skew the results! My Tanita is very kind to me, actually. I’d love to believe my body fat is as low as it says!
